Frequently asked questions
What equipment can I rent?+
Skis and poles, a snowboard, boots, a helmet and protection. Everything is fitted to your size, height and level before you head out.
Is rental included in the lesson?+
No, they're separate things. The gear is rented by Snowmotion and paid for there; what we do is get you the 10% discount. You get it whether or not you book lessons with us: just show our voucher at the shop.
Do I need to book the gear in advance?+
Nothing is held for you: you choose your gear at the shop when you pick it up, and they fit it to you there. What does help is telling us you'll need it when you request your lesson, so we can plan around it and send you your 10% voucher.
How do I know what helmet size I need?+
Measure the circumference of your head just above the eyebrows. Ask us when you book and we'll help you get the fit right.
Before you rent, or before you buy
Renting saves you the purchase, but it's worth knowing what you're being handed — and what to look for the day you decide to buy your own. These guides go piece by piece, with the measurements and the standards that actually matter.
How to choose a ski or snowboard helmet
Getting the size right, what MIPS actually does, and which standards a certified helmet has to meet. A clear guide before you buy.
How to choose your ski boots
The shell fit test, why they should feel tight in the shop, what last width is, and why your boot sole is a safety question.
How to choose your snowboard boots
The heel test is what decides, not the toe test. Why they should feel tight in the shop, what overhang is, and how to lace them in two zones.
How to choose your skis
Length, waist width, turn radius and flex explained so you can read any spec sheet, plus the part almost nobody covers: the bindings.
How to choose your snowboard
Your weight sets the size, not your height. Width, profile, flex and shape explained, and why it's worth renting before you buy your first board.
How to choose ski and snowboard goggles
Goggles or sunglasses, lens categories, colours and getting the fit right with your helmet. A clear guide to seeing well and protecting your eyes on snow.
How to choose ski and snowboard gloves
Gloves or mittens, waterproofing, insulation and getting the size right. A clear guide to choosing well and not freezing on the mountain.
Ski and snowboard clothing: the three layers and their materials
The three-layer system explained, what each material does — Gore-Tex, merino, PrimaLoft, Cordura — and how to read the water column rating on a jacket.
